About the Company

After exploding onto the New York scene, VIM VIGOR has become one of the most buzzed about contemporary dance companies the city has to offer. Founded by choreographer Shannon Gillen, who was named among New York’s top 20 artists by Brooklyn Magazine, VIM VIGOR was established as the home for her choreographic and educational endeavors. The company draws from the dance-theater lineage and each creation unearths innovative ways to combine heroic physicality, electric emotional life and cinematic imagery. During Gillen’s extensive career as a freelance choreographer she received commissions from notable festivals and venues including Mainfranken Theater Würzburg, International Solo Tanz Theater Festival in Stuttgart (3rd Prize in Dance), International Tanz Theater Festival in Hannover, Springboard Danse Festival in Montreal, Hubbard Street 2, New York Live Arts, Judson Church, PULSE Fair at Art Basel, Bryant Park Presents, NYC’s River to River Festival, the Joyce Theater, and Jacob’s Pillow. Building on these experiences, VIM VIGOR was established as a home where Gillen could collaborate with world-class dancers to bring the most thrilling dance theater possible to the States and beyond. The company debuted to sold out audiences and glowing reviews at the GK ArtsCenter in Brooklyn and also caught the attention of contemporary women’s line PHELAN for its New York Fashion Week shows, which VOGUE championed as ‘utterly mesmerizing’. VIM VIGOR was recently selected by DANCEWORKS as the recipient of a creation grant and will travel to California to build a work at the historic Lobero Theater in Santa Barbara in Fall 2016, before returning to New York to lay groundwork for the company’s NY premiere in early 2017. VIM VIGOR is also dedicated to elevating and nurturing the professional lives of young dance artists with educational programming. After a successful year of offering workshops and classes at The Juilliard School, Ailey/Fordham, NYU Tisch, New Jersey Dance Theater Ensemble, Princeton University, SUNY Purchase and the professional community at large, the company is offering a summer intensive in NYC in August 2016, focused on floor work, partnering, improvisation, composition and acting.

About the Piece

Enters the turbid psychic space of highway travel and anonymous companionship. Caught up at a midway point, five characters travel through the past, present and dark hallucinatory projections of the future. Stilled periods of waiting juxtapose wild physical bouts of surreal movement, as reality gives way to the imagination. What is the distance between where we have come from and where we want to go? Between what happens to us and who we are? Can the space between bodies and ideas ever be joined? And if not, can we exist in the middle ground of separation?
